Security

Under HIPAA, doctors, insurance companies and other healthcare industry organizations must take steps to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity and availability of patients' electronic health data. Any organization sending private data over a wireless network is required to examine whether encrypting that data in transit is necessary to ensure confidentiality. Terabeam Wireless offers robust security features as part of its solutions. The TeraMax™ series is powered by our proprietary protocol TurboCell®. TurboCell has base-to-client two-way authentication to prevent access by third party devices even if they are TurboCell-based. Marquee devices donot store any user data so there are no issues in terms of privacy of user information. As far as transmission of data over the air is concerned, in addition to the proprietary nature of the protocol, TurboCell uses WEP+, DES and Blowfish encryption which together make the communication very secure. TurboCell also has a full firewall as well as a special firewall that prevents client-to-client communication.

The GigaLink® series provides the inherent security features of using the 60 GHz frequency band. The signal is nearly impossible to intercept due to the typically short ranges involved (less than 1 km), the narrow beamwidth (approximately 0.5 degrees), the low level of the receive signal, and the high cost of equipment required to attempt interception. In the extremely unlikely event that a signal was intercepted, recovery of any transmitted data would not be trivial; the deconvolution of the framing information and data signal would be another barrier to compromising data security.

For encryption on the GigaLink 6000 series, if desired, we recommend the use of security appliances, such as provided by our partner CipherOptics, who provide encryption to government agencies. CipherOptics IPSec appliances are uniquely suited to the demands of secure, high-speed, broadband wireless networking. By having the lowest latency of any encryption solution, and providing IPSecbased data security, CipherOptics is leading the way for simple, yet robust, wireless security. CipherOptics IPSec appliances fit easily into existing networks, supporting any IP-based protocol. Their "bump-in-the-wire" implementation allows them to be added to the network just before the data leaves to be transmitted over frequency bands. The CipherOptics IPSec appliance is installed between the internal network and the wireless interface connection.

Managing growing volumes of patient information. Expanding into and connecting new facilities and satellite offices. Racing to comply with new regulations. Keeping costs under control. The healthcare industry in the U.S. has responded to these and other challenges by rapidly innovating on the basis of state-of-the-art technology. These organizations have been at the forefront of enterprises which have recognized that wireless technology has proven it has the performance, security and cost effectiveness to carry mission-critical applications and data.

Drawing from the broadest portfolio of wireless networking solutions in the industry, Terabeam Wireless has enabled a variety of applications at medical centers across the country. In one scenario utilizing our TeraStar™ (802.11) series, a major hospital needed to extend the existing wired computer network for access by mobile computer carts. These carts, which accompany patients as they are routed through the facility for medical procedures, acquireintake and other data from the patients and transmit them to the data center. In addition to enabling real-time data monitoring, these carts will enable the data center to locate a patient quickly. This location capability is due to the network’s creative design – it was designed so that each department is exactly covered by a single access point.

In another scenario, a hospital is using our GigaLink® 60 GHz links to transmit MRI data to a physician's satellite office. With the bandwidth of fiber available at distances up to 1 km, and without recurring monthly charges or the need for trenching or permits, this solution proved to be ideal for this application.
