The City Of San Francisco And Terabeam Wireless Bring Wireless Internet Access To Union Square
Falls Church, VA November 16, 2004: Terabeam Wireless, the business name of YDI Wireless, Inc. (NASDAQ:YDIW), a leading developer and supplier of broadband wireless solutions, has supplied the wireless network equipment enabling the City of San Francisco, California to offer citizens, local businesses and visitors free access to the Internet in and around Union Square. The service is being offered on a test basis by a partnership that includes Terabeam, the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the Department of Telecommunications and Information Services (DTIS), the Recreation and Parks Department, and UnwireNow, a San Francisco based network consulting and engineering firm. Starting with this pilot project, the Mayor's Office has directed DTIS to work with city departments to develop a citywide wireless broadband policy and explore other opportunities to use wireless broadband services throughout San Francisco.
Internet access is available via the increasingly popular wireless fidelity or Wi-Fi TM technology, commonly found in “hotspots” in airports, hotels, retail establishments and other public venues around the world. Wi-Fi TM uses an access point which allows persons with wireless-enabled computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs) to connect to the Internet while in range of the access point.
“I am very pleased to launch this service in Union Square,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “San Francisco is one of the most technically-savvy, connected cities in the world. I believe technology can improve the lives of all citizens, especially through the tremendous amount of information available on the Internet.” Newsom continued, “Now, even more citizens have convenient, free access to that information in one of San Francisco's vibrant public areas.”
Robert Fitzgerald, Terabeam Wireless’s Chief Executive Officer, said “We are honored that a city as grand and forward-thinking as San Francisco has chosen our technology to power its Wi-Fi TM network. Our 18-year heritage of excellence in wireless networking is being applied by municipalities around the world looking for innovative and cost-effective ways to bring broadband access to their citizens.”Terabeam Wireless is the business name of YDI Wireless, Inc.
