Day 1 Course Description

Using license-free radio bands, ISPs can set up their own wireless Internet Infrastructure to offer fixed high-speed wireless Internet services to customers. This technology is competitive with high-speed DSL and Cable modem services, but completely bypasses the local Telco's and Cable franchises. These bands can also be used for bridging buildings and LANs for enterprise applications.

This is a technical presentation geared to ISPs, WISPs, Wi-Fi® operators, Internet and networking managers, and engineers who want to learn more details about the license-free radio bands. The focus is on using wireless as a means to offer high-speed wireless Internet access or bridging. It is custom tailored for Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and network engineers who want to deploy wireless systems. It is a must for new WISPs or those thinking of becoming one. It is the formal compilation of the hundreds of questions and issues that come up again and again. One way or another, WISPs will have to learn about the topics presented. Many do it the hard way: on their own. This winds up wasting a lot of time and costing a lot of money. For those with some radio or outdoor WLAN experience, this training rounds out their knowledge.

Attendees will learn the capabilities and limitations of the equipment as well as the radio basics of wireless LAN and how to deploy it. Those that come to this presentation will get most of what they need to know during this 2-day session. This is the opportunity to get all your questions about this wireless technology answered by one of the leaders in this field. Topics discussed include:

  • License-free radio bands
  • Technical definitions (dB, dBm, EIRP, dBi, etc.)
  • Types of spread spectrum (FHSS, DSSS, and OFDM)
  • How radios talk
  • Amplifiers: How they work, when to use them
  • Antenna basics
  • Range and system operating margins (SOM)
  • Wireless Internet Systems overview
  • 2.4 GHz WIPOP systems
  • Base station configurations and antenna options
  • Client Premise Equipment (CPE) options
  • Bridging vs. Access Point operation
  • Bandwidth Control for WISP operation
  • 5.3/5.8 GHz options
  • Interference issues and solutions
  • Tips, techniques and anecdotes
  • Q&A period

Typical system designs are also discussed. Attendees will get an understanding of the basic technical issues and some insight on what type of experience and personnel are needed to deploy these systems. Interesting and informative anecdotes, as well as practical tips and techniques will be presented that will be invaluable to those considering deploying license-free wireless Internet.

There is time scheduled after the formal presentation to address typical customer applications during the Q&A period.
